Alternating Current
The main conceptual starting point of the series is emergence. Emergence in sociology explains the spontaneous development of social structures, norms and phenomena that result from interactions between individuals and groups in society and shape collective behaviour, culture and organisation. The concept encompasses both expected patterns of social organisation and unexpected phenomena such as social movements or cultural trends, highlighting the interconnectedness and interdependence of social actors and structures. Feedback loops and self-organization contribute to emergent dynamics, highlighting the non-linear and unpredictable nature of social change.
Specifically, I am interested in the manifestations of the digitality of modern society, its technocratic tendencies, and the impact of modern technology on individual experience. This is mirrored in my choice of subject matter for the series, which consists mainly of abstract drawings of neural network diagrams, distorted human figures and machine diagrams.
Materially, these are abstract paintings created on upcycled boards and canvas, supplemented by fragments of building rubble, cabling and other urban finds. Using printmaking techniques such as xerox transfer, overhead printing and monotype in combination with acrylic painting, a base is created, which is then complemented by fragments of "ready-made" material.
What I find significant is the contrast between the physical, sometimes even outdated, material execution of the series and its digital focus. The project aims to confront the viewer with this contrast, in an attempt to inspire them to consider their own place on this spectrum. Analog or digital?
